Creating Custom Page Layouts in SharePoint Online

Client Profile

Our client is a technology services provider that serves the hospitality and financial services industries in Japan.

Overview

The client required a unique design for a web page (top page) to display custom components. The page layout, including background images and text colors, needed to auto-update based on seasons ‒ Autumn, Spring, Summer, and Winter.

The initial implementation strategy called for customizations to the existing master page. As the client was not in favor of modifications to the existing master page, we started evaluating an alternate approach.

Our Solution

We recommended custom page layouts in SharePoint Online as it did not require master page changes. Custom page layout was implemented in such a way that content editors can easily create new pages and add/manage content. The layout featured additional functionalities such as configurable content areas. Seasonal changes on the layout were code-based and did not require manual effort.

Although the requirement was for a single page, the ability to configure content areas enabled the client to reuse page layout to create similar pages.

Key Features

  • Customizable page layout designed as reusable templates
  • On-page edit mode to add text, metadata, and new pages
  • Configurable footer area
  • Auto-updates based on seasonal changes

Technologies

  • SharePoint Online
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
